9. Conclusion
As the largest and most widely distributed physician primary care specialty in the U.S.12, family medicine plays an essential role in our health system. The family medicine workforce is heterogenous in both demographic and practice patterns, distributes across the country in patterns similar to the U.S. population, works in a variety of clinical settings, and has wide ranges in practice scope. Family physicians collaborate in interdisciplinary teams and innovate to adapt to rapid changes in health technology. The data presented in the Family Medicine Factbook is intended to promote further understanding of the characteristics and contributions of family medicine as a discipline. We hope that use of information from the Factbook will inform physicians, patients, policymakers, educators, and other readers interested in advancing health but also in supporting family medicine research, education, reform, and advocacy.
